Description: Italy, Tuscany, and the fabulous medieval city of Siena- one cannot imagine this great artistic, historic and cultural heritage, without also considering the rich legacy of Italian music. Italy, the birthplace of the opera, resounds with the music of Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini. We, at the Dante Alighieri, offer students the opportunity to experience the glory of Italy’s culture through the study of Italy’s language and its great musical heritage.
The OPERAPHILE course allows students to study Italian language and operatic music and history, while also having time for cultural activities, including cooking lessons. The music segment of this class is taught mostly in English language, and will emphasize a particular composer and opera. Students will attend a live performance of this opera at the Arena of Verona, at the Puccini Festival (Torre del Lago), or at the Teatro Comunale of Florence. OPERAPHILE class is designed for students who wish to improve their Italian language skills, experience Italian opera at its best, and attend other fun and varied cultural activities, such as a cooking class. Students will learn much about the cuisine, history and culture of Siena. This program lasts two weeks, and welcomes participants of all ages and all levels of expertise in Italian language. It is an excellent opportunity for total immersion in Italian culture. English comprehension is necessary for the musical segment of this class. OPERAPHILE students may extend their studies beyond two weeks, by taking any other ongoing Italian language or culture class at the Dante Alighieri.
